Description BBC Profile:
Bristol East was created in 1983, when boundary changes reduced the city's parliamentary representation from five seats to four. Tony Benn has been MP for the area but in 1983, he was beaten by Conservative Jonathan Sayeed. Labour regained the seat in 1992 under Jean Corston who then handed over to Kerry McCarthy in 2005, when her 45.9% share was 9% down on Labour's 2001 figure.

Boundary changes mean the seat has gained two wards from Kingswood, lost two to Bristol West and lost a part-ward to Bristol South. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

A mixed constituency, it comprises inner-city areas as well as more affluent suburbs.

Many workers in Bristol East are employed to the east of the constituency in the electronics and aerospace operations based just outside the city.
