Description BBC Profile:
The seat has been held by Conservative Alan Duncan since 1992. At the 2005 election his majority was 12,930 votes.

Minimal boundary changes will be seen at the next election. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

Lying just south of Nottingham, Rutland and Melton is one of the most rural constituencies in the country. It consists of the county unitary authority of Rutland, with the small market towns of Oakham and Uppingham. The largest town in the seat is Melton Mowbray.

This rural constituency is relatively wealthy, with a larger than average number of high-income families and very few pockets of extreme poverty.

The largest employers are all retail, including Land's End, a mail order clothing company in Oakham, Pedigree Masterfoods in Melton Mowbray and Samworth Brothers Foods Group. The other main occupations are, predictably, agriculture and small businesses dependent on hunting, such as farriers.

It is also a strong commuting region with many people travelling to the main surrounding towns of Leicester, Nottingham, Grantham, Loughborough, Stamford and Corby.
