Former Trent Polytechnic (now Nottingham Trent University) student and community worker Alan Simpson has held the seat for Labour since 1992. Before that it was held by the Conservatives during the 1980s. Mr Simpson's majority in 2005 was 7,486 votes.
At the election, the boundary changes will see part of the Basford ward go to Nottingham North. Parts of densely populated and council-house heavy St Ann's and Arboretum move to Nottingham East. Nottingham South is perhaps the most socially and economically mixed constituency in the county. The city seat ranges from the council estates of Clifton to the vast student population of Lenton, to the prospering and constantly changing city centre.
It is difficult to categorise Nottingham South economically as a whole. The south-western Wollaton wards are some of the wealthiest in the region, with high numbers of the professional and managerial class. The most deprived areas are in the south and east of the seat, particularly Clifton and Radford.
The Lenton area, bordering the city centre, is populated by students, a thriving West Indian and African community, and young professionals attracted to the handful of newly built apartment complexes towards the river. The Meadows estate is also contained within the seats boundaries.

Raleigh, the cycle manufacturer, was the major employer in the area until its closure some 10 years ago. The old site now hosts student accommodation. The Boots factory in the nearby Broxtowe constituency employs a number of Nottingham South residents.
Student spending is a major boost to the local economy, especially for the many bars, nightclubs and takeaways bordering Lenton Boulevard.
