Description BBC Profile:
Nottingham North has been won by Labour in all but one general election since the seat's creation in 1955. In the general election of 1983 the Conservatives took the seat with lawyer Richard Ottoway winning by just 362 votes.

In 1987, however, Nottingham North returned a Labour member to Parliament in Graham Allen. Mr Allen, a local man and former warehouse worker, has remained MP for the constituency since then. His majority in 2005 was 12,171 votes.

At the election, boundary changes to the constituency see part ward of Basford added to the seat, and the loss of part of the Leen Valley ward to Nottingham South. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

Manufacturing, while declining, is still the major employment sector. Boots, based in the nearby seat of Broxtowe, is one of the largest employers. Imperial Tobacco also has a number of Nottingham East constituents working in its plant.

The mining industry, while not as crucial to the area's economy as it is to other, more rural Nottinghamshire seats, was also a major employer until its decline in the late 1980s.
