Description |
BBC Profile:
Philip Sawford took the seat for Labour in 1997, a swing of 11%, giving him a majority of 189 votes. He held the seat in 2001, but in 2005 Philip Hollobone won for the Conservatives with a 5.9% majority.
At the election, boundary changes mean that the seat loses Boughton and Pitsford, Brixworth, Clipston, Moulton, Spratton, Walgrave, Welford, and its part-wards of West Haddon and Guilsborough, and Yelvercroft to Daventry. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
This Northamptonshire seat is made up of three semi-industrial towns: Burton Latimer, Desborough and Rothwell, and the borough of Kettering. It also includes numerous villages around the Welland Valley, and some commuter villages from the area covered by Daventry District Council.
The seat contains the headquarters of Weetabix, RCI (timeshare property exchange) and Pegasus (accounting software). By far the biggest employer in the area is the Kettering General Hospital.
The area is connected to the national road network by the A14, and this has increased employment prospects in the area since its creation. Consequently the town is within easy reach of most parts of the country. There are links to Harwich and the industrial heartlands as well as the A1/M1 link. A half-hourly train service to St Pancras also directly connects to the new Channel Tunnel Rail link there.
