Description |
BBC Profile:
The seat has a history of long-serving Labour MPs. Twenty years under peace campaigner Philip Noel-Baker (1950 to 1970) were followed by 13 (1970 to 1983) with Walter Johnson at the helm. Margaret Beckett, the former foreign secretary and deputy Labour leader, first won the seat in 1983 with a majority of just 421 votes. In 2005 she had a 13% majority.
At the election, boundary changes have moved some wards into Derby North. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
The constituency of Derby South encompasses the working-class heart of Derby. Many residents work at one of the engineering giants which call Derby home, from the Rolls-Royce aerospace factory to the famous railway plant.
The seat is one of the most ethnically diverse in the East Midlands, with large Indian and Pakistani communities in Derby's southern suburbs and significant numbers arriving from Eastern Europe.
