Description BBC Profile:
Current MP David Gauke was easily able to maintain his majority in 2005, with a 46.9% share of the vote. However, although the Conservative majority had been slipping, neither Labour nor the Liberal Democrats have so far emerged as a clear challenger.

At the election, the seat does not lose any wards due to boundary changes, but does gain the rest of wards Bovingdon, Flaunden & Chipperfield, from Hemel Hempstead. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

As possibly one of the most bizarrely shaped constituencies in the UK, South West Hertfordshire is approximately 22 miles long, and at its widest point, four miles wide. It follows the contours of the Grand Union Canal, stretching from Tring to Moor Park. It is largely rural, and comprised mainly of small towns and villages.

The south of the constituency is served by the Metropolitan Underground line to central London, as well as the A41 in the north, and M25 in the south, and the area is natural commuter territory. The towns of Rickmansworth, Chorleywood and Croxley Green are prime examples of the dormitory towns that dominate this predominantly middle-class part of the constituency.
