Description BBC Profile:
Thanet South was a Conservative seat until 1997. The party regularly polled over 50% of the vote in general elections. This was the seat of Jonathan Aitken who at the time of the 1997 election was facing the allegations that eventually resulted in him being jailed for perjury. Aitken had represented Thanet South for 25 years, and in 1997 he defended a 11,513 majority but saw Labour's Dr Stephen Ladyman take the seat with a majority of 2,878.

In 2001 his majority slipped to 1,792. He held the seat in 2005 by just 664 votes.

At the election, the seat gains a part-ward from Dover, two wards from Thanet North and loses one part-ward to each of those seats. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

Thanet South sits at the eastern tip of Kent. It includes the coastal resorts of Broadstairs and Ramsgate plus the port of Sandwich and a number of smaller towns and villages such as Minster, Ash and Wingham.

The largest employer is Pfizer but other large employers include Sericol and Kent International Airport which is owned by Infratil.

The new high-speed rail service introduced in 2009 has significantly cut the journey time into St Pancras International.
