Description BBC Profile:
Conservative David Wilshire first won the seat in 1987 with a majority of 20,050 votes. In 1997, his majority fell to 3,473 but by 2005 had risen to 9,936.

There are no boundary changes affecting this seat.

Just south of Heathrow airport and north of the Thames, Spelthorne is a built-up area with fewer open green spaces, private roads and woodlands than other seats in Surrey.

Most of the land surrounding the urban areas of Spelthorne is designated as greenbelt and there are a large number of reservoirs which helps to keep it distinct from London. The area is still quite affluent.

The major centres of population are Ashford, Shepperton, Stanwell and Sunbury and Staines - which has a major shopping centre providing retail jobs.

Communications and the financial sector also account for a large number of jobs. Heathrow, one of the busiest airports in the world, is a huge employer.
