This longstanding Labour seat was represented from 1955 to 1970 by Horace King, who became the first Labour Speaker of the House of Commons in 1965. Labour continued to represent this seat until the Conservatives took control in the 1983 and 1987 elections.
In 1992 Labour reclaimed the seat when John Denham won with a majority of 551, on a 12% swing. In 1997, he increased his share of the vote to over 50% and returned similar results in 2001 and 2005, when his majority was 9,302.
The seat loses two part-wards to Southampton Test (Bevois and Freemantle) and one part-ward (Swaythling) to the new seat of Romsey and Southampton North. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
The Southampton constituencies are named after the two rivers flowing through the city, and Itchen is the city's eastern side.
It contains the city centre, most of the docks, marina and exclusive Ocean Village quarter and inner-city council estates.
Southampton's airport has also made the city a popular departure point for regional travellers to Europe.
The constituency includes the impoverished Thornhill area in the east of the city. On the basis of a whole range of social exclusion measures, the area was given 49 million pounds to spend over a ten-year period (culminating in 2010) to regenerate health and education, enhance the living environment, and reduce crime and unempl

Development has brought major improvements to the city, but developments need to be sensitive in regenerating the run-down areas of the city while retaining the historical maritime ambiance associated with the Old Town.
