Brian White took the seat for Labour from the Conservatives in 1997, and retained it at the 2001 general election.
In 2005 the Labour majority was overturned by the Conservatives on a 3.6% swing, with new candidate Mark Lancaster victorious.
At the election, boundary changes mean the new Milton Keynes North seat consists predominantly of the previous Milton Keynes North East's wards. However, the new seat now includes Campbell Park, Middleton and Wolverton as complete wards. The seat loses its predecessors part-wards of Bletchley and Fenny Stratford, and Walton Park. This new Buckinghamshire seat comprises new town areas of Milton Keynes, along with older communities of Newport Pagnell astride the M1 motorway, Olney and Woburn Sands.
One of the largest private employers in Milton Keynes is the Open University, based in the South constituency. The national headquarters of Abbey National, Schwab investment bankers, Amazons distribution centre, call-centres, and BTs training centre are also here.
Milton Keynes had the country's first multiplex cinema, the first NHS Direct centre, and even has a ski slope with real snow. Cars and motor-racing are important, with the Silverstone racing circuit nearby. Formula 1 team Red Bull Racing is based in the constituency.
