BBC Profile:
From five-figure Conservative majorities in the 1970s, 1980s and early 1990s the party's vote fell away in 1997 leaving the incumbent MP Julian Brazier with a majority of 3,964. In 2001 his majority fell further to 2,069.
In 2005 there was a swing away from Labour that benefited both the Liberal Democrats and Conservatives and ensured Brazier a much healthier majority of 7,471.
At the election, boundary changes are minimal, with the seat losing the Marshside ward to Thanet North. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
The constituency of Canterbury is best known for the cathedral in the city centre, but also includes a number of surrounding villages, and the seaside town of Whitstable, famous for its oysters.
There is a large concentration of higher education facilities and a correspondingly high percentage of students, attending the University of Kent, Canterbury Christ Church University, University for the Creative Arts and Canterbury College. The large education sector also contributes many jobs to the economy.
This is a relatively prosperous constituency with one of the largest and most diverse economies in Kent. There is a strong light engineering and manufacturing base at the major business parks in Whitstable and nearby Herne Bay, which is just outside the constituency, which has developed significantly in the last decade.

Kent is unusual in England as it still operates the 11-plus selection system for secondary school admissions.
