BBC Profile:
Stockton North has been a Labour seat since 1945. The last Conservative to sit in this seat was former Prime Minister Harold Macmillan, who was MP from 1924 to 1945, with the exception of a two-year break. Macmillan was so affected by his experiences in Stockton North during the depression that he later took the name of his earldom from this seat in 1984, when he was elevated to the House of Lords.
From 1983, Labour's percentage of the vote grew from 37% to a peak of 67% in 1997. Although the Labour majority dropped from 21,357 in 1997 to 14,647 in 2001, the party's vote-share stayed more or less the same.
Despite a 3.6% swing to the Conservatives at the 2005 general election, the party actually polled 300 fewer votes than in 2001.

Stockton North can be said to be dominated both physically, and to some extent economically, by the plant, one of the largest employers in the area. ICI has divested itself of much of the plant, and it is now owned by firms such as Tharp and Tioxide.
Stockton is a working-class region, with more than half the population involved in manual occupations. Nearly one-fifth of the working population is involved in manufacturing industry; Teesside Airport - which is within this seat - is also a major provider of local jobs.
