Description BBC Profile:
Labour's Doug Henderson has been the MP since 1987, when he secured 42.7% of the vote, increasing that to 62% by 1997. In 2005, when the Liberal Democrats benefited from a big swing, he still won with 50% of the vote and a margin of 18.3%.

At the election, boundary changes mean that the seat loses its part-wards of Benwell and Scotswood, Fenham, Kenton and West Gosforth to Newcastle Central. It gains the rest of the Castle, Denton, East Gosforth, Fawdon, and Woolsington wards, from Newcastle upon Tyne Central. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

Very little of the seat is composed of built-up districts; instead open countryside, villages and small towns north of the actual city cover most of the area, encompassing rural, industrial and residential areas.

Though the shipbuilding industry in this part of the world has been in major decline, the constituency is home to many companies that feed into this industry, and some constituents are employed by shipyards in nearby areas or by sub-contractors in the constituency.

Newcastle airport, which falls within the constituency boundaries, is a major employer, as are the Sanofi-Winthrop medical laboratory, British Bakers, and Nestle Rowntree. The seat is also home to Newcastle racecourse.
