No wards were lost in the latest boundary changes, but a whole ward Coseley East was gained from Dudley North. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
Situated north of Dudley, Wolverhampton South East is now composed of seven wards: Coseley East, Bilston East and Bilston North, Blakenhall, East Park, Ettingshall and Spring Vale.
In autumn 2003 car tyre production at Goodyear's Fordhouses plant ceased with the loss of 400 jobs, making the total number of job losses at the plant 2,000 since 1997; the plant finally closed in 2006. Although lower than it was, unemployment is still well above the national average, at 8.4% in May 2008.
Secondary schools in Wolverhampton as a whole underperformed, with one ranked among the worst-performing schools in the country.
The area approximately covered by this seat has been made a health action zone, with funding channelled into local innovation projects and voluntary organisations. The Royal Wolverhampton Hospitals NHS Trust was listed in the 2006/07 'Annual Health Check' as one of the most improved hospital trusts in the country.
