Description BBC Profile:
The seat has been held by Labour since 1945. Former speaker of the House of Commons Betty Boothroyd was the sitting MP for nearly three decades.

The current MP is Adrian Bailey, who won in 2005 with 54.3% of the vote and a 10,894 majority.

Boundary changes mean Oldbury, Tividale and Wednesbury South wards have been consolidated inside this seat. West Bromwich East now makes inroads inside the seat's former south-eastern border (Greets Green and Lyng) while Halesowen has edged up from Rowley in the south. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

West Bromwich is typical of the industrial towns of the West Midlands, with a manufacturing and engineering economic base.

The area was at the heart of the industrial revolution in mining, engineering, metalwork and manufacturing and in line with regional post-industrial trends, there have been in recent years above-average numbers classified as having never worked or being long-term unemployed.
