Description |
BBC Profile:
Telford was formerly included in the old Wrekin seat, which had swung between Labour and Conservative no fewer than seven times since 1945.
Since boundary changes in 1997, the new seat has remained Labour. Current MP David Wright won in 2005 with a majority of 5,406 votes.
Boundary changes mean parts of several more rural wards move into Wrekin. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
Telford, in Shropshire, was designated as a new town in 1946, but only really developed from 1968.
While most of the seat is centred on Telford, it also includes the picturesque gorge town of Ironbridge, so-called birthplace of the Industrial Revolution.
Although Telford is maturing, a large proportion of its population is under 16, while 16- to 24-year-olds and 25- to 39-year-olds are also more heavily represented here than in the UK generally. The population has grown steadily from 75,000 in 1961 to 160,000 in 2001, exceeding both central and local government predictions.
Telford's economy supports a mixture of medium-sized companies, particularly in the service sector. The four biggest companies are GKN Sankey, Epson, Denso Manufacturing, and a major strategic partnership serving Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs.
Several new developments are under way in the Telford area, including a multi-million revamp of Madeley town centre.
