BBC Profile:
Formerly known as Staffordshire South West, this constituency was formed in 1974 when Cannock was split. Sir Patrick Cormack won Cannock from Nye Bevans' widow, Jennie Lee, in 1970 when he overturned her 11,000-vote majority; but he moved to the new seat on its creation and has represented it ever since to become one of the longest serving Members of Parliament. Through the years Cormack returned majorities of around 20,000 in the 1980s and 1990s. In 1997, with boundary changes the Conservatives were still returned with a 7,821 vote majority, with above 50% of the vote share.
In 2005 the death of the Lib Dem candidate during the general election campaign caused the poll to be postponed until a deferred poll in June.
At this election the boundary changes that affect this seat are minor. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

There are more agricultural and mining and quarrying jobs in South Staffordshire than the national average.
