Description BBC Profile:
This seat was held by Conservative MP John Taylor between 1983 and 2005, when it was taken by Liberal Democrat candidate Lorely Burt with a 10% swing.

In the constituency boundary changes at the election, Solihull will gain parts of Elmdon and St Alphege wards from Meriden; parts of Bickenhill and Blythe wards will be transferred into Meriden in return. The changes make Solihull neater on its eastern edge, with the chunk of Bickenhill ward that jutted due east into Meriden giving way to a cleaner divide. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below. Boundary changes mean that this seat is notionally - or estimated to be - a Conservative held seat.

Solihull borders the south-eastern fringes of Birmingham and is one of the most desirable residential areas of the West Midlands conurbation.

St Alphege and Shirley South in particular are exemplars of middle-class suburbia.

Manufacturing has until very recently been a very important staple and Land-Rover's Lode Lane plant is based here; Land-Rover is the largest employer in the seat.

Public administration, education and health are now dominant employment sectors.
