Description BBC Profile:
Since its creation in 1983 Labour candidates have won every contest here. The first MP was Ioan Evans who had been MP for the predecessor Aberdare seat since 1974. Aberdare had been held by the Labour Party since 1922.

Evans died in 1984 and the by-election was won by Labour's Ann Clwyd. Clwyd won all general elections contested since then and her 2005 majority was 13,259 over Plaid Cymru.

At the election, Cilfynydd and Glyncoch electoral divisions are transferred from the Pontypridd constituency to Cynon Valley. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

This seat was previously known as Aberdare, and encompasses the town of that name. It is a former mining area and was home to the last deep mine in Wales, the worker-owned Tower colliery, which closed in 2008.

The mines and most of the heavy industry that once formed the backbone of the economy in South Wales have now gone, replaced by new industries housed on industrial estates throughout the constituency.

As one of the key old mining districts this is a seat with a large number of sufferers from industrial diseases.
