Description BBC Profile:
In its previous form, as Carmarthen, this was the scene of Plaid Cymru's first-ever Westminster election victory in 1966, when it was won by Gwynfor Evans. It was then lost in 1970 to Labour's Gwynoro Jones, who retained it by only three votes in February 1974. Evans regained it in the second general election that year, only to lose it again in 1979. Between 1979 and 2001 it was held for Labour by Roger Thomas (1979 to 1987) and Alan Williams.

In 2001 Adam Price won the seat for Plaid Cymru. He increased his majority to 6,718 on a 5.4% swing.

At the election, boundary changes are very minor and involve the moving of the part of the Cynwyl Elfed electoral division that was located in this seat into the Carmarthen West and South Pembrokeshire constituency. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

Covering a large rural area to the east of Carmarthen, this seat also contains part of the Amman Valley, an old anthracite coalfield.

The economy has historically been based on manual labour. Farming and mining were the traditional mainstays.

Llanarthne is home to the National Botanic Gardens of Wales. The seat has one of the largest percentages of Welsh speakers.
