Description BBC Profile:
The constituency was created in its existing form in 1983 from the old Cardiff North West constituency, which included part of Barry, now in the Vale of Glamorgan. Tory Gwilym Jones was the first winner in the seat and continued to represent the seat in 1987.

In 1992 Labour challenger, Julie Morgan, reduced the Conservative majority to 2,969. In 1997 Morgan won the seat for Labour with a majority of 8,126 votes. She held the seat in 2001.

In 2005 Jonathan Morgan for the Conservatives achieved a 5.9% swing to cut Julie Morgan's majority to 1,146.

There are no boundary changes affecting this seat.

The northern Cardiff division includes some of the most attractive suburbs surrounding the Welsh capital, including Whitchurch.

Arguably the most prosperous place in Wales, the seat has very high levels of home ownership and a large number of those homes are large detached houses. The area known as Gabalfa contains public sector housing.

Major employers include the Inland Revenue and the University Hospital of Wales.

The M4 runs across the upper reaches of the constituency, and the A470 slices through on its way north to Llandudno, providing good transport links and helping attract inward investment.
