Blaydon's electoral history is a story of Labour domination. John McWilliam retired as MP before the 2005 election after serving Blaydon for 26 years. His majority in 2001 was 7,809. David Anderson held the seat in 2005, but the Labour majority shrank to 5,335. The main opposition in the area comes from the Liberal Democrats.

Boundary changes see the wards of Dunston Hill and Whickham East (previously part of Gateshead and Washington West), and Lamesley, Whickham South and Sunniside (previously part of Tyne Bridge) fall entirely within the Blaydon constituency. Industries in the constituency were badly hit during the 1980s, but there are signs of regeneration.

The retail and call-centre sectors are expanding, as are the numbers of small businesses. Major employers within the constituency include AEI Cables Ltd, Myson Radiators Ltd, Reliance Security Services Ltd, NatWest Switchcard Head Office, Pyeroy Ltd, Allied Bakeries Gateshead, and BAE Systems.

The MetroCentre, which opened in 1986, has some 264,000 square metres of retail space.
