Description BBC Profile:
At the first general election for the new West Tyrone constituency in 1997 the nationalist electorate was split between Sinn Fein and the Social Democratic and Labour Party, allowing Ulster Unionist William Thompson to take the seat with a small majority.

A coalescence of nationalists behind Sinn Fein's Pat Doherty enabled him to claim the seat ahead of both Thompson and his SDLP rival Brid Rodgers in the 2001 general election.

The 2005 general election was notable for the principle challenge to Pat Doherty coming from Dr Kieran Deeney, campaigning for the retention of hospital services in Omagh. Doherty was able to hold the seat with a majority of 5,005.

There are no boundary changes affecting this seat.

This is a predominantly Catholic constituency. Roughly mid-way between Belfast and Derry, it is a mainly rural seat, with gently rolling hills, glens, forests, loughs and rivers. It covers two district council areas centred on its major towns, Strabane and Omagh.

Omagh is a major administrative and service area. Agriculture is an important employer, along with associated processing industries. There is also some manufacturing including textiles production.

Omagh was the scene of one of the worst atrocities in the Troubles, when a car bomb in August 1998 and killed 29 people.

The constituency has one of the largest Catholic populations in Northern Ireland.
