Before the 1997 Labour general election victory, no Labour candidate had ever won here. The constituency had been in Conservative hands since 1885 and had been represented by a single MP, Dame Jill Knight, for the previous 31 years. Gisela Stuart's victory for Labour continued the constituency's record for the longest run of women serving as MPs, the first being Dame Edith Pitt in 1953. Stuart was returned with a majority of 2,349 votes in 2005.
At the election, Bartley Green and Harborne wards will now fall entirely within this seat, having formerly been shared with Birmingham Northfield and Ladywood. The gain of the Harborne ward stretches the old constituency boundaries to the north, and Bartley Green gains from Birmingham Northfield add a chunk in the south; the loss of a Selly Oak ward fragment in the south is relatively minor. Birmingham Edgbaston represents a sizeable part of the western side of Britain's second largest city.
The seat houses Birmingham University, the prestigious King Edward's School and Edgbaston cricket ground, home to Warwickshire County Cricket Club. The two largest employers are Birmingham University and the University Hospital Trust, both based in the Edgbaston ward.
