President Mahmoud Abbas extended his term by a year to allow presidential and parliamentary elections to be held simultaneously. Hamas disputes Abbas's move to extend his term and recognizes Abdel Aziz Duwaik, the Speaker of the Palestinian Legislative Council, as the new president. Abbas is recognized in the West Bank and Duwaik is recognized in Gaza.
