Description |
With this election Fusae Ota became Japan's first elected female governor. Her election was something of a coronation in that she was supported by the ruling LDP-Komeito-Liberal Party coalition as well as the main opposition Democratic Party, but the end result was much closer than expected. Traditionally the Communist Party has held a solid base of support in Osaka, but the surprising showing for Ajisawa became as much the story of the election as was Ota's barrier-breaking victory. The Osaka branch of the LDP broke with the national party and supported Hiraoka, which likely led to a split in the ruling coalition vote and helped Ota's margin of victory seem less impressive.
