Description |
U.S. Attorney for Massachusetts Michael J. Sullivan was designated Acting Director of the ATF on August 31, 2006. He served in that capacity until the end of the Bush administration. He also continued his service as US Attorney.
On March 22, 2007 he was officially nominated to be Director of the ATF. Sullivan's nomination was blocked by a Senate hold placed by Senators David Vitter (R-La.), Michael Crapo (R-Idaho) and Larry E. Craig (R-Idaho). Sullivan's confirmation was opposed by gun rights groups such as the Gun Owners of America, Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms and Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership. His nomination was never acted upon during the 110th Congress.
Nominee: Michael J. Sullivan, of Massachusetts, to be Director, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. (New Position)
