Labours David Weitzman dominated the local political scene for three decades after the Second World War. He was succeeded in 1979 by Ernest Roberts and the seat is currently held by Labours Diane Abbott, who made history in 1987 as the first black woman elected to Parliament.
Her 21,100 majority in 1997 fell to 18,081 in 2001. In 2005 Abbott held the seat with a 7,427 majority, after a 10.8% swing to the Lib Dems.
At the election, Hackney North and Stoke Newington will gain the part-wards of Dalston and Leabridge from Hackney South and Shoreditch, while the part-ward of Hackney Central has gone the other way and will join the Hackney South and Shoreditch constituency. The seat lies within the north-east London borough of Hackney, stretching from Dalston in the south of the constituency to Stoke Newington in the north.
It has significant ethnic communities and a large rented sector.
Increased bus numbers and the expansion of the Overland network have improved transport in the area.
Economically, Hackney will benefit from the infrastructure being created for the 2012 Olympic Games. Almost one third of the Olympic estate is in the borough, bringing the largest ever regeneration project in the East End of London.
