Description BBC Profile:
Enfield Southgate was a Conservative seat since 1950 until Michael Portillo was defeated by Labour's Stephen Twigg at the 1997 election.

However, Conservative David Burrowes took back the constituency in 2005, by a majority of 1,747 an 8.7% swing against Labour.

At the election, the seat loses part-wards of Bush Hill Park and Upper Edmonton to the Edmonton constituency and a part-ward of Highlands to Enfield North. It gains one part-ward each of Bowes and Palmers Green wards from Edmonton and part-wards of Grange from Edmonton and Enfield North. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

Local transport services are under pressure and further investment is needed. The area is served by First Capital Connect trains and the Piccadilly Line on the underground. The North Circular Road (A406) has been the subject of controversial expansion proposals.
