The marginal seat of Croydon Central was created in 1997 and with about 80,000 people registered to vote, it had the largest electorate on the mainland.
Until 1997, the predecessor seat was Conservative, but it was won that year by Labour MP Geraint Davies. He held on in 2001, but in 2005 the seat was taken by Tory Andrew Pelling by just 75 votes.
Boundary changes have seen the loss of part-wards Broad Green and South Norwood to Croydon North, and three full wards to neighbouring Croydon South: Croham, Selsdon and Ballards, and Waddon.

Croydon Central contains the areas largest retail centre and is a key location for shops and offices outside central London but within commuting distance.
The Border and Immigration Agency employs a large number of people at its Croydon Central headquarters.
Demographically, most of the seat is white, semi-detached and suburban, but to the north it is more ethnically mixed. At the southern end is the large council estate of New Addington.
The Croydon Gateway development - part of the councils Vision 2020 regeneration project - will include apartments, landscaped open space, office space, cafes, restaurants and a new theatre.
Already good transport links could become even better by 2013, when an extension of Croydon Tramlink is due to open, serving an additional 11,0 [More...]
