Description |
BBC Profile:
The 2005 boundary review cut the 10 Glasgow seats to seven. This division contains wards from five of the previous Glasgow seats, the bulk formed by combining the central wards of the old Govan, Kelvin and Shettleston seats, which used to divide the city centre. Govan and Shettleston provided five wards to the south west and south east, Kelvin contributed three wards to the northern portion, while its 11th ward, at the southern tip, used to be shared between Rutherglen and Shettleston.
Mohammad Sarwar won in 2005 with 48% of the vote. Notionally, this represented a 6.5% reduction in Labour's share of the vote which was consistent with the regional swing against the party.
There are no boundary changes affecting this seat.
This constituency straddles the river Clyde and contains many of Glasgow's best-known landmarks including Glasgow Central railway station and the cathedral.
The cityscape includes some architecturally significant tenement properties as well as Victorian town houses and the Merchant City, which has been rejuvenated in recent decades with luxury apartments, boutique shops and a number of smart bars and restaurants.
Glasgow was awarded the 2014 Commonwealth Games in 2007. The seat is to be the home of the athletes' village, which will be built by the river in Dalmarnock at the seat's border with the eastern division. After the Games the homes will be sold or socially rented, giving the area some much-needed rejuvenation.
