| Description |
The New Jersey legislature was narrowly divided following the election of 1886, with two Labor Party assemblymen holding the balance of power.
The Republicans controlled the state senate, while the Democratic Party controlled the state house. Although the Democrats held one more seat than the Republicans, they were badly divided following their previous state convention, in which the majority of the delegates were over-ridden on a technicality in the balloting for Governor.
On the penultimate ballot, Blodgett led with 39 votes to 38 for Abbott, 2 for Sewall, and one each for Potter and Kays. One the final ballot (3/2/1887), two days before the term was scheduled to begin, Blodgett was chosen with 41 votes to 39 for Abbott and one for Potter.
