The Ohio State Journal reported that voter turnout was heavy until noon, followed by another rush to get to the polls by 5:30, when polls closed. Poll workers who were interviewed in the lull stated that the voters were casting more straight-ticket votes than usual. [Ohio State Journal, 11/8/1916]
President Woodrow Wilson scored an unanticipatedly wide 52-44% margin in Ohio. Both Wilson and Charles Evan Hughes broke the earlier highest vote for a presidential nominee, set by Teddy Roosevelt in 1904.
Casting the Electoral Vote
The Democratic Presidential Electors met in Columbus on 1/8/1917. They cast a unanimous vote for Wilson and Thomas Marshall and approved a short telegram to send to Wilson commending his efforts to keep the US out of the World War. James M. Cox was inaugurated as Governor at noon, and he telegraphed the Electors' note to Wilson as his first official act. John Krause of Cleveland was chosen to carry the certificate of vote to the Vice President's office in Washington DC. [Ohio State Journal, 1/9/1917]
