Description |
In the fall of 1850, the New Hampshire Democratic state convention nominated John Atwood for Governor. Atwood was a vocal opponent of the Compromise of 1850.
State Democratic leaders, who overwhelmingly supported the Compromise, urged Atwood to maintain silence regarding the Compromise. Atwood refused. Several state Democratic leaders called for a replacement nominee; among these leading Democrats was Franklin Pierce.
State Democrats called the state convention back into session to decide whether to remove Atwood from the ticket. The convention voted as shown here and came to be called the "decapitating Convention."
