Traxler was originally appointed to District Court by President Bush I. In 1998, as a favor to Democrat Fritz Hollings and Republican Strom Thurmond (who recommended him), Clinton appointed him to the Circuit Court. It appears he is a Republican if not a conservative Democrat.
