Description |
An effort has been underway for years calling for a split of Santa Barbara County, due to economic and philosophical differences.
Enough signatures were gathered, that the Governor had to appoint a five member commission to determine if a split was economically feasible.
In a report issued on March 28, 2005, [Link] (very lengthy), it has been determined that such a split is feasible.
On June 6, voters will determine whether or not to approve such a split, which would be on a general north-south line, with Santa Barbara being the county seat of Santa Barbara County, and Santa Maria (most likely, this would be determined following an approved split) being the county seat of Mission County.
If a split is approved, county officers will be elected in November 2006.
