Description |
The Democrats won an important victory in the 1974 elections for U.S. Senate. They won 23 races to 11 for the Republicans, a net gain of four. As a result, the Democrats held 60 seats (enough to break a filibuster) to 38 for the Republicans. One of the Republican wins (NH) was contested and ended up in Democratic hands later.
New Senators: Bumpers (D-AR), Hart (D-CO), Stone (D-FL), Culver (D-IA), Ford (D-KY), Laxalt (R-NV), Wyman (R-NH), Morgan (D-NC), Glenn (D-OH), Garn (R-UT), and Leahy (D-VT).
