Description

Charles R. Jones Candidacy
Charles R. Jones, editor of the Charlotte Observer, was a candidate in this race briefly. Jones had flirted with third party efforts previously. He entered the race in early July 1882 as an Independent (Charlotte Democrat, 7/14/1882). Jones worked with local Republicans and leaders of the Liberal Anti-Prohibition Party to try to gain their endorsement. It became evident that the LAP wanted to lead the charge in southern NC. Jones feared a three-way race and withdrew from contention in early September (Raleigh Christian Advocate, 9/13/1882). Afterwards, Jones decided to return to the Democrats (Pamlico Enterprise, 9/22/1882).

Democratic Convention
The Democratic district convention met at Wadesboro on 8/23/1882. Several Democrats opposed Dowd's re-nomination. Newspapers didn't state why the convention decided to adopt the 2/3 rule for nominations, and no newspapers reported the results of the balloting. Candidates opposing Dowd were Walter L. Steele, J.A. Leak, and J.A. Rowland. Dowd and Steele were the leading contenders. Dowd was eventually nominated on the 22d ballot (Charlotte Observer, 8/24/1882).

Johnston's LAP Candidacy
Johnston entered the race in early October (Anson Times, 10/12/1882). He had sought the Democratic nomination in 1880, and as a statewide leader of the LAP movement, he had chaired its state convention in the summer of 1882.
