Democratic nomination
The Democratic district convention met in Greensboro on 7/16/1902. The delegates nominated Kitchin for another term unanimously (Charlotte News, 7/16/1902).
Independent Democratic nomination
A group of Independent Democrats who were opposed to an association with the Populists held a state convention in Greensboro on 9/11/1902. They nominated a state ticket headed by Thomas N. Hill, who was running for Chief Justice of the state Supreme Court. Afterwards, a group of them held a 5th District convention and nominated Patterson for US House (Asheville Times, 9/12/1902).
Republican nomination
The Republican district convention was held in Greensboro on 9/22. The delegates endorsed Patterson's candidacy (Greensboro Patriot, 9/24/1902).
