Description |
Ribble Valley and South Ribble were safe Conservative seats created in the boundary review of 1983. It took 14 years for Labour to chip away at the Tories' South Ribble majority and win the seat but this has not happened in Ribble Valley. Indeed, it was regarded as the Conservatives fourth safest seat before the 1983 election. It was held by the former Home Secretary, David Waddington until his elevation to the Lords in 1991. At the ensuing by-election the Lib Dems scored a surprise win by 4,600 votes on a massive swing, but were ousted the following year by Tory Nigel Evans. He has held it ever since and his percentage majority virtually doubled between 1997 and 2001 from 11.6% to 22.9%. This is an area of low unemployment and high owner-occupation (84%). With its countryside, small towns and villages, this is a desirable commuter area.
