Description Because the new Senate session begins a week before the Governor takes office, Donald DiFrancesco was no longer Governor when his State Senate term lapsed.

A 20 - 20 partisan split in the State Senate led to two Acting Governors in that period of time. In a pre-arranged deal with GOP Senate leader John Bennett, Senate Democrat Co-President Dick Codey became governor on midnight of January 12, 2002, and served until noon of January 15th, when Governor McGreevey was sworn into office.
