Description Along with Edgbaston, Hall Green was lost by the Conservatives to Labour in 1997. Stephen McCabe won it then from Andrew Hargreaves - the first time Labour had won here since 1950 - and he held on four years later with an identical percentage majority - 20.1%. Hall Green is suburban southern Birmingham between the city centre and Solihull. It contains public parks, open space and numerous tree-lined streets. One famous landmark is Sarehole mill, where JRR Tolkein spent his boyhood and which provided an inspiration for 'The Hobbit' and 'Lord of the Rings'. It is one of the city's wealthier seats and the demographic statistics reflect this. The number of ethnic minorities at 17% is the lowest in the city as is the number in council accommodation (20%). Many constituents are employed in the car industry - notably at nearby MG Rover. The seat consists of the wards of Hall Green itself - an area built between the wars - and Billesley and Brandwood, a mix of private and council housing. The latter two tend to return a Labour majority, despite a vote for the Tories in 2000. Hall Green tends towards the Liberal Democrats but the Tories scored here in 2002. Lib Dem success locally here has not so far been reflected constituency-wide - the party was a distant third in 2001.
