Description |
Garry Furnari, considered to be the sole vulnerable Democratic incumbent in 2001, retired to take a judgeship rather than press his luck with voters for a third time. Furnari was replaced in a special election by Democratic Assemblyman Paul Sarlo, who is now seeking election to a full term.
The Republicans fielded former Assemblyman John Kelly for the second consecutive election. Kelly, who will be 77 on election day, was chosen by GOP bosses over Bergen County Clerk Kathleen Donovan, but some Republicans are now questioning whether or not she would have made the stronger candidate against the youthful and energetic Sarlo.
This district, one of the most volatile in the state (with a noticable Dem lean), is obviously being very seriously contested for at least the fifth cycle in a row.
