Description Special election to fill the vacancy occasioned by the death of W. Kerr Scott. Jordan had been appointed to the seat in the spring of 1958.

Clarke was nominated at the Republican state executive committee meeting on 5/24/1958.

Jordan was nominated at the Democratic state executive committee meeting on 7/25/1958. The vote was nearly unanimous, with two votes against his nomination.
