Description |
Since the Democratic debacles of 1991 - 1994, heavily democratic Essex County has been governed by Republican James Treffinger. After running for the Republican nomination for US Senate in 2000 and 2002, Treffinger's future was cut short by corruption charges (an all too familiar scenario in North Jersey). Though Treffinger was able to win reelection in 1998, Republican representation of the Freeholder board was limited to 2 of 9 seats. After redistricting and the 2002 election, Republican represenation at the county level has sunk even lower, as they held only one of their two seats.
The race to succeed Treffinger was between Candice Straight (R-Bloomfield), a nationally known political activist, and Freeholder President Joe DiVincenzo (D-Newark). Candy struggled to make the election a referendum on the controversial plan to build a stadium in Newark (opposed by the suburbs), but there are more than three Democrats in Essex for every Republican. As a result, Straight never gained traction.
