Republican nomination
The Texas Republican state convention met in San Antonio on 8/27/1952. Party leaders had sent feelers out to some anti-Adlai Stevenson Democrats about cross-endorsing the state Democratic ticket as a means of making it easier for Democratic voters to vote for Eisenhower. At the state convention, the plan was presented to the delegates. Although it was a surprise to many delegates, who asked informational questions, the delegates ultimately voted unanimously to endorse the entire Democratic state ticket (Austin American-Statesman, 8/27/1952 [an evening paper]).
In the election, the Republican vote for Shivers was 25% more than the previous record vote for a Republican candidate for Texas governor.
