Democratic nomination
Gardner announced his candidacy in late 1915 but was seriously injured in an auto accident. He recuperated through early 1916 and was still walking with crutches into the spring. His only announced opponent was St. Sen. Neal Pharr, who had to withdraw on 4/11. Gardner thus won the nomination without a primary.
Republican nomination
Jenkins was originally running for Secretary of State. Thomas J. Harkins was running for the Republican nomination early in 1916. The party's executive committee met on 4/9 and nominated the state ticket to preclude a primary for state offices, resulting in Jenkins's nomination.
