Description |
Perhaps the most controversial New Jersey election of the 1990s. Problems with a voting machine led to a successful legal challenge of this election by Republican Ken Faulkner.
When the court nullified the result of the election, Conners was unseated and his Assembly seat was declared vacant. Pursuant to New Jersey law, the last party to win the seat in a general election is empowered to fill the vacancy. Since Republicans Diane Allen and Carmine DeSopo last won the seat in 1995, the members of the Burlington and Camden County Republican Parties chose third-place finisher Ken Faulkner to fill the vacancy until a special election could be held for the seat in November of 1998.
Faulker would lose the special election in a landslide to Jack Conners.
