Description |
Erastus Fairbanks fell 305 votes short of a majority in the General Election of 1852. The joint assembly convened on October 15 to hear the report of the canvassing committee and, in the case of the office of Governor, to vote by joint ballot for the three candidates who received the greatest number of votes. On what seems to be the first ballot, when the ballots were taken and counted, Erastus Fairbanks was elected Governor of the State of Vermont. According to Walter Crockett (III, pp. 400-401), Fairbanks received 117 votes, Robinson 61 and Brainerd 40. Out of 218 possible votes, this means Fairbanks received 53.7%, Robinson 27.9%, and Brainerd 18.3% of the legislative vote.
